November 2, 2018. - 50 Year Sutherland Trails

Directions: Take 1-10 south and take Exit 240. Turn left (east) on Tangerine Road. In 13.5 miles turn right onto Oracle Road, then in 0.2 miles turn left into Catalina State Park. At the Guard Shack purchase a car pass - cost $7.00. Proceed to the parking lot on the left.  The trip is 63 miles. 

The distance of the hike is 6 miles and is rated as a C+, which is fairly easy. All hikers will hike in one group.

January 20, 2017 - Romero Pools - Long Hike or Sutherland Trail - Short Hike in Catalina State Park



This hike is postponed for a week due to the forecast of rain. Then it was too wet to go the next week.

Romero Pools or Sutherland Trail


From I-10 and Florence Blvd. go south on I-10. At Exit 240 go east on Tangerine Rd. to Oracle Rd, (Hwy 77). Turn right (south) less than a mile turn left at the light into Catalina State Park.  $6 entrance fee required. Proceed easterly to the trail head.   32°25’30.60”N  110°54’29.82”W

About 60 mi.    

Longer hike - Romero Pools. The hike starts by crossing the wash east of the parking area, and is easy for the first half mile, then becomes a steep, rocky trail to the ridge. The ridge has beautiful rock formations and great views. Gentler climbing until dropping down to the stream crossing at Romero Pools.  5.6 miles.  1046’ elev. gain   B+,  5  hrs.

Shorter hike - Sutherland Trail.  The hike begins at the north side of the parking area and goes 2.6 mi. to the Trail Link junction. There are some very scenic spots along the trail with the mountains towering above and some rather lush vegetation and interesting rock formations to add to the interest. Lunch at a large flat rock with a creek running by it.  642’ elev. gain  C,  5.4 mi.
