ITINERARY FOR CHIRICAHUA WEEKEND HIKES
FRIDAY – leave at 8:00 a.m. Bring lunch and water. (a cooler would be handy, may not be frigs in motel room). Rendezvous at Exit 318 before continuing on to Cochise Stronghold Trailhead. Group hike – 4-6 miles round trip. After the hike continue driving to Willcox and check into the motel. Dinner on your own. There several Mexican restaurants, Country Pride Buffet, Country Fare restaurant, and for a big appetite, Big Tex BBQ located in a railroad car. Get sandwiches and snacks at Safeway for Saturday’s hike.
SATURDAY – Continental breakfast in the motel. Leave at 8:00 a.m. Line-up cars outside hotel before leaving. Options for the day: Group hike at the Chiricahuas will be 4 to 11 miles. We will meet at the Visitors Center and carpool to the top. On your own: Out and back through Echo Canyon (your distance), Ft. Bowie (1 mile), Faraway Ranch (2.4 miles or drive to it), Natural Bridge (4.8 miles). Non – hikers: Chiricahua Visitor Center, Drive to top with lookouts, Rex Allen Jr. Museum. After hiking return to Willcox and dinner on your own or travel back to Casa Grande. Get lunch stuff at Safeway for Sundays hike.
SUNDAY – Continental breakfast in the motel. Leave at 8:00 a.m. Line-up cars outside hotel before leaving. Group hike – Natural Bridge at the Chiricahuas – 4.8 miles round trip. Other options: see Saturdays list. After hike, travel back to Casa Grande.
